If you look confused, then you're right.. What is this language that we begin to speak when we become parents? Or even when a baby is in our near vicinity? I told myself I would never be one of those people that spoke to baby's in that awful sing-songy tune, that I would speak to them properly and not alter my language.
HA!!!
When you're looking at this gorgeous little face, and shes smiling at you just because you said "hello" to her, how can you NOT talk to her in a sing songy voice?? I seem to have a case of the double speak too..
Nap-nap has two meanings. It means changing her nappy, and putting her down for a nap. Bot-Bot has two meaning. It means changing her bottom, and giving her a bottle. (I express and feed her EBM {expressed Breast Milk})
Barse means Bath time. I change the "th" to a "s" sound and I watch her face light up as though she knows what I'm saying. (Then again, her face lights up when I say "ewww!! poo-poo's!!" as well, so that doesn't mean that much!)
Language is a funny thing. It's like I've forgotten how to speak again. I have to learn how to speak at the same time as Poppy.. She's making all these coo-ing noises at the moment and I'm repeating them back to her. I must sound like a complete idiot! It's funnier when I pretend I'm having a conversation with her. "Oh really? What happened next? {coooooooo} Really?? Don't leave me hanging! What else happened? {coooo ahhhhhhh} Oh no she didn't did she?? {cooooo!!} Wow!" and so on and so forth. She thinks it's the funniest thing in the world.
It's great when they start talking (or coo-ing in this case), now it's just me who's gotta remember how to speak properly...
Oh yay! Din-din time! Night all!
I read somewhere once that some sing-songy talk can be good for babies, because it stimulates different parts of their brain, and they just like the sound of it. I'm not sure if it's true, but I hope it is, because I find myself talking to other people's babies like that and I'm almost certain to do it to mine! :-)
ReplyDeleteYeah, sing-songy talk is really good (mum told me that too!), it's the made up words that I have to look out for! :)
DeleteHaha we all do it! I swore I never would and I am a shocker for it now!
ReplyDeleteI also read it is good for their brains, so it's not so bad :)
I say nap-nap for nap and nappy change although 'barse' is much more suitable for bath, I have started saying 'barf-ies!', LOL.
"Barf-ies" I think would give the wrong impression!! LOL!! I can't stop myself saying Barse, and she just loves it.. I'll have to change the "nap-nap" though!
DeleteOh I remember doing that with my first child (swearing I wouldnt!) I expressed with MissC for 4 months until I felt like all I was doing was expressing/feeding/expressing/feeding! She went onto formula after that! She was born very small and cut up my nipples so bad I had to have surgery on them!
ReplyDeleteFeeding my second was easier with BF... but after a few bouts of mastitis I decided to go onto formula.
You do what you do... and I love saying nap-nap and bot-bot and when they start developing their language they start saying it back to you!
Haha! I use the exact same words! We say 'barse' for bath, and "time to change your nappy-nap-nap!" And likewise - I have no idea where I've pulled these words from? :-)
